Embrace Your Reality

It is a natural human tendency to resist change, especially if it is unpleasant. This is typically true of people who encounter health conditions that impose certain limitations on their abilities, or come in the way of the life they had envisioned for themselves.

Take the example of Phil Hansen – a supremely talented artist who loved making pointillist drawings until tremors in his hands forced him to give up his artistic passion. Needless to say, Hansen was devastated.  Just when he thought he had nothing to look forward to due to his damaged hand, his neurologist suggested that he “embrace the shake”. This advice was an eye opener for Hansen who went on to express his art through other, more creative mediums.

We often find it difficult to accept our own reality. We resist what we don’t expect, what we don’t want, what we don’t like, and, as a result, we suffer. Hansen offers a magnificent lesson of not merely accepting his situation, but going one step further and embracing it wholeheartedly.
