Are You Leading Or Managing?

Many of us, who believe we are leaders, are in fact, managers. What’s the difference? In this inspiring 7-minute Leadercast video, entrepreneur and best-selling author Seth Godin, tells us what sets a leader apart from the managers.

Managers, Godin says, work in the realm of authority and control, while leaders take responsibility. It’s control versus influence. And a leader doesn’t ask his team to report to him every hour with the “status” of their task. He knows that this just takes away from the value that they can add. Leaders think beyond the immediate ‘project’ and inspire people to give their best.

One of the easiest ways you can figure out if you’re leading or just managing is to listen to what type of conversations you’re having with the people around you. Are they coming to you with questions about the task at hand? Or are they talking to you about aspirations and ideas?
