Simple Leadership Tips From Formula 1 Racing

A victory often portrays only one side of the picture – that of the individual’s achievement. However, the efforts of an entire team that makes the success possible go unrecognized quite often. Ferrari’s Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo tells us how even in Formula 1 racing, every individual driver’s victory has the stamp of a hundred others who have made it possible for him. A true leader inspires his team, gives them the right opportunities, supports them and recognizes their efforts.  A Formula 1 driver is much more than an individual racer. He leads a team that puts in the best effort possible to win.

In this inspiring 4-minute talk at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, he tells us about his experience with some of the best F1 drivers – including Niki Lauda, Michael Schumacher, and Fernando Alonso – and how they are each leaders in their own right. A good leader sets up the appropriate opportunities for his team, and gives them due credit. But he is also quick to take responsibility in tough times, and offer his support.
